Session 14
Final-year presentations: Master Minor and Master Major
Course team Taught by the course team: Tobias Hodel, Elena Spadini and Francesco Beretta.
In this session
Presentations by students completing the Master Minor and the Master Major.
For Major students this is an explicit test run for the defence: the same format, the same kind of questions, without the consequences.
Format
| Master Minor | Master Major | |
|---|---|---|
| Presentation | Project work (Projektarbeit) | MA thesis |
| Length | To be confirmed | To be confirmed |
| Setting | Presentation and discussion | Defence rehearsal, with questions from the panel |
What to prepare
- The research question and why it is worth asking
- Sources and data: what you have, how you got it, what its limits are
- Method: what you did, and why that rather than something else
- Results, including the ones that did not fit
- Limitations — anticipate the objection and make it yourself first
- Reproducibility: where the data and the code are
For everyone else
Attendance is expected even if you are not presenting. Watching a defence rehearsal a year or two before your own is the cheapest preparation available, and the questions asked of others are the questions you will be asked.
Closing the semester
- Where the Lab goes next
- Colloquia, projects and assistantships at DH Bern
- Final questions on the assignment
